This Project Assistant role is based in the UNESCO Dar es Salaam Office and directly supports the implementation of the project “Closing the Digital Divide: Ensuring Gender-Transformative Digital Skills Education for Women and Girls.”
The project is a partnership between UNESCO, Beijing Normal University (BNU), and the UNESCO International Research and Training Centre for Rural Education (INRULED). Its mission is to strengthen digital education opportunities for women and girls in Tanzania—addressing a critical need for equitable access to technology and skills in an increasingly digital world.
As a Project Assistant, you will work under the overall authority of the UNESCO Head of Office and Country Representative, and directly report to the Head of the Education Sector. The role combines technical, administrative, financial, and communication responsibilities, ensuring smooth project delivery and alignment with UNESCO’s global mandate for gender-transformative education.
This position is a non-staff contract at Level 2, with an initial duration of one year. The duty station is Dar es Salaam, and applications are open to both internal and external candidates who meet the requirements.
Tasks
The Project Assistant will be responsible for a broad range of functions spanning administration, implementation, reporting, financial management, and communications. Key responsibilities include:
1. Programme Implementation & Administrative Support
- Facilitate the day-to-day implementation of project activities.
- Prepare detailed work plans, progress reports, and official project documents.
- Ensure project activities are delivered on time, with high quality, and in accordance with approved workplans.
- Organize and participate in meetings, workshops, and trainings with internal and external partners.
- Manage documentation, filing systems, and payment requests in line with UNESCO’s rules and regulations.
2. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting
- Track project progress against objectives and deliverables.
- Report on achievements, challenges, and areas for improvement.
- Support monitoring frameworks that strengthen accountability and impact measurement.
3. Financial Management
- Monitor and manage project expenditures while keeping accurate financial records.
- Liaise with finance colleagues to prepare reconciliations, reports, and audits.
- Ensure compliance with UNESCO’s financial rules and regulations.
- Support timely financial closure of activities and contracts.
4. Communication & Visibility
- Develop communication materials highlighting project milestones and achievements.
- Contribute to UNESCO’s visibility efforts through events, media engagement, and online platforms.
- Promote knowledge-sharing strategies to enhance project delivery.
- Act as a liaison between UNESCO Dar es Salaam, UNESCO HQ, BNU, and INRULED.

Qualifications
To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the required education, experience, language, and skills criteria.
Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, or a related field.
Experience
- At least 3 years of professional experience in project implementation in areas such as education, curriculum development, skills training, or sustainable development.
- Experience in higher education programs is considered an asset.
Languages
- Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong coordination and interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective partnerships.
- Excellent analytical and conceptual skills.
- Ability to work independently under pressure, managing multiple priorities.

Desirable Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following will be considered a strong advantage:
- At least 2 years of experience in project management or partnership building with UN agencies, NGOs, or other international organizations.
- Familiarity with UN systems, regulations, and procedures.
- Understanding of UNESCO’s mandate and operational frameworks.
- Ability to work effectively with government institutions, local communities, and international stakeholders.
